Ahto Valter (born Aleksander) was an Estonian sailor, notable for being the first person to sail around the world under the Estonian flag. Born on July 15, 1912, in Heinaste, he completed his schooling at Tallinna 9. Algkool and briefly attended other institutions. In 1930, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. He made several ocean voyages throughout the early 1930s and set a speed record between New York and Tallinn. In the late 1930s, he sailed around the globe with his family on the yacht 'Ahto III'.
