Airi Snellman-Hänninen was a Finnish textile artist born on February 27, 1930, in Oulu, and passed away on February 19, 2022, in Espoo. She studied at the Arts and Crafts School from 1950 to 1953 and has had her own studio since 1952. Initially focused on rugs in the 1950s, she later explored experimental textile artworks, evolving into free-standing sculptures by the 1960s. She designed textiles for various churches and public spaces, often in collaboration with her husband, interior architect Olavi Hänninen. Her works have been exhibited widely in Finland and abroad. In 1989, she was named Textile Artist of the Year in Finland.
