He was a 1968 batch officer and held the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police, Border Range, Amritsar, at the time of his death on 7 May 1991 during an encounter with militants in Punjab. His legacy continues through his son, Ajinder Singh, who is a Superintendent of Police in Punjab.
