Akihito, born on December 23, 1933, served as the Emperor of Japan from 1989 until 2019, becoming the 125th emperor in the country's traditional succession line. Known as 'His Imperial Majesty' during his reign, he was posthumously named Emperor Heisei. Akihito was the eldest son of Emperor Shōwa and Empress Nagako. He represented Japan at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953 and married Shoda Michiko in 1959, with whom he had three children. He abdicated on April 30, 2019, and was succeeded by his son Naruhito on May 1, 2019.
