He served as the Minister of Education from 2015 to 2019 and was a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka representing Kurunegala from 2004 to 2020. Kariyawasam is currently the president of the trade union Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya and is affiliated with the United National Party.
