Akira Gunji is a former Japanese politician who served as a senator for Ibaraki from 1998 to 2022. He was also the vice president of the Senate from 2016 to 2019 and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in the Noda Cabinet from June to December 2012. Gunji began his career working for Isejin, a company that operates hotels and wedding venues in Ibaraki. He later became involved in the Zenkoku Nōdanrō, a labor union for agricultural, forestry, and fishery personnel, where he held several positions including vice secretary, deputy chairman, and secretary of the Ibaraki prefectural association. He was elected to the Senate in 1998, 2004, and 2010, and served as vice minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries from 2009 to 2010. He was also the chairman of several Senate committees, including the Environment Committee, the Committee on Administrative Oversight, and the Agriculture Committee. Gunji retired from politics in 2022.
