He grew up in Denver and had a long-time friendship with Neal Cassady from age twelve. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marine. Under the name Ed Dunkel, he appeared in Jack Kerouac's novel 'On the Road', and he is also mentioned in other works like 'Visions of Cody'. In 2012, he published a memoir titled 'Last Man Standing', reflecting on his experiences and legacy within the Beat movement.
