Al Purdy (1918-2000), originally named Alfred Wellington Purdy, was a prominent Canadian poet renowned for his prolific literary career spanning fifty-seven years. He published a total of thirty-nine poetry collections, along with a novel, two memoirs, and a four-volume correspondence. Born in Ontario, Purdy received two Governor General's Awards for literature in 1965 and 1986 for his works 'The Cariboo Horses' and 'Collected Poems 1956-1986'. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1983 and later to the Order of Ontario. A statue of him was erected in Toronto's Queen's Park in 2008.
