Born in Italy to Santo Tomaini and Maria Bossone, Tomaini outgrew his father by age 12. He was a sideshow performer, meeting his wife Jeanie Smith at a circus in 1943. After eloping, they lived in Gibsonton, Florida, where he engaged in community affairs and ran several businesses before his death.
