Alan Arthur Wells was a British engineer known for his research in fracture and brittle fracture mechanics, as well as for inventing the Wells turbine. He served as a professor of Structural Science at Queen's University, Belfast from 1964 to 1977. He worked at the British Welding Research Association both from 1951 to 1964 and again from 1977 until his retirement in 1988. In the late 1980s, Wells notably developed the innovative Wells turbine, capable of rotating consistently in the same direction despite varying airflows.
