Alan LaVern Bean (March 15, 1932 – May 26, 2018) was an American naval officer, aviator, aerospace engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut. He was the fourth person to walk on the Moon and was selected for the astronaut program in 1963 as part of Group 3. His first spaceflight was Apollo 12 in November 1969, and he commanded Skylab 3 in 1973, spending 59 days in space. After leaving the Navy and NASA, he pursued painting, infusing color into his lunar artwork. He passed away in May 2018 due to sudden illness.
