Alan Cotter is a retired New Zealand rowing coxswain born on November 24, 1956, in Ngāruawāhia. He won bronze and silver medals in the men's eight at the 1978 and 1979 World Rowing Championships, respectively. Cotter served as the High Performance Director for Rowing New Zealand from 2008 until 2018. Although selected for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he could not compete due to the boycott. He also coached the men's coxed four at the 1988 Olympics, securing a silver medal. He faced challenges in his role and resigned following allegations of bullying.
