Alan Graham MacDiarmid (April 14, 1927 - February 7, 2007) was a New Zealand chemist who gained prominence in the field of conductive polymers. Growing up in a poor family, he developed an early interest in chemistry through old books belonging to his father. He earned a master's degree and later obtained two doctorates from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Cambridge. MacDiarmid spent 45 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where he became a full professor. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2000 alongside Alan Heeger and Hideki Shirakawa.
