Jean Eugène Albert Zimmer was an Alsatian resistance fighter and a soldier in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II. Born on July 12, 1922, in La Wantzenau, he died on November 23, 1944, while participating in the liberation of Strasbourg. Serving as a tank commander for the M4A3 Sherman named 'Cherbourg', he was instantly killed by an anti-tank fire just meters from the Kehl bridge and the German border, being the first to reach there. He died near his hometown without having the chance to reunite with his family, whom he left in July 1941 after escaping from annexed Alsace.
