Alvércio Moreira Gomes was a Brazilian astronomer and mathematician born on March 12, 1915, in Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, ES. He graduated in Mathematics and later earned a degree in Civil Engineering. Gomes served as a professor of Astronomy at the Naval School and worked at the National Observatory. He interned at Mount Palomar Observatory with Fritz Zwicky, where he discovered four supernovae. In 1957, he moved to the Valongo Observatory, contributing to the establishment of Brazil's first astronomy undergraduate program before returning to the National Observatory.
