He studied under renowned medical historian Paul Diepgen and published a dissertation on folk medicine. He held various positions, including working for Heinrich Himmler’s personal staff and serving as a medical officer in the Waffen-SS during WWII. Post-war, he worked as a radiologist but faced controversies in academia, leading to his loss of legitimacy in medical history. His co-author, Bernward Gottlieb, also had ties to the SS and was involved in Nazi medical historiography.
