Alexander Gelhaar was a German U-boat commander during World War II, born on November 24, 1908, in Frankfurt. He led two combat missions in which he sank two merchant ships. Gelhaar commanded the U-1, the first submarine constructed after World War I, from October 1, 1936, to February 2, 1938. He died in the Atlantic Ocean on October 14, 1939.
