Alexander Keynan (1921-2012) was a prominent Israeli microbiologist, co-founder and first director of the Israel Institute for Biological Research. Born in Kiev, he immigrated to Palestine in 1930 and earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Hebrew University. Keynan contributed significantly to microbiology and served in various prestigious roles, including head of the Institute of Life Sciences and chairman of the National Council for Research and Development. His work laid important foundations in the field during his career, which lasted until his retirement in 1990.
