Alexandru Ciubotaru was a prominent Moldovan specialist in embryology, cariology, cytogenetics, and plant biotechnology. He was born on February 20, 1932, in Șipca, Orhei County, Romania, and became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova in 1976, later becoming a full member in 1992. Ciubotaru was the founder of the Botanical Garden and passed away on April 26, 2017, in Chișinău, Moldova, just days after the garden was damaged by a severe snowstorm.
