Alexei Andreyevich Tupolev (May 20, 1925 - May 12, 2001) was a Soviet aircraft designer known for developing the Tupolev Tu-144, the world's first supersonic passenger aircraft. He also contributed to the design of the Buran space shuttle and the Tu-2000, which was ultimately cancelled due to funding shortages. He was the son of the renowned Soviet aircraft designer Andrei Tupolev, graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1949, and began working in the Tupolev Design Bureau, where he rose to chief designer in 1963 and general designer in 1973.
