After serving in the German Wehrmacht during World War II, he completed his education and became a teacher. In 1955, he joined the Austrian Federal Army, where he held various positions, rising to the rank of general. He was the commander of the I. Corps from 1980 to 1985 and was instrumental in implementing defense strategies in Austria. Battyan received multiple honors for his service, including awards recognizing his contributions to the Republic of Austria.
