Alfred Kölz (1944-2003) was a Swiss legal scholar renowned for his contributions to public law, administrative law, and constitutional history. After initially studying civil engineering, he shifted to law, earning his doctorate in 1973 and his habilitation in 1978. He was appointed as a professor at the University of Zurich, serving as dean from 1996 to 1998. Known for his work on the Swiss Constitution, Kölz co-authored a draft for a new federal constitution in 1984 and contributed to the new Zurich cantonal constitution. His final work, on Swiss constitutional history, was published posthumously.
