Alfred Paul Egon Schlya, born on October 25, 1935, in Hettstedt, is a prominent German chess official. He served as the President of the Chess Federation of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1993 to 2001 and is currently its honorary president. Schlya was involved in organizing the 1961 European Team Championship and was instrumental in making chess a non-profit sport. He became the President of the German Chess Federation in 2001 but did not seek re-election in 2007, being honored as honorary president. He has received multiple accolades for his contributions to chess.
