Alga Soligo Malfatti was a pioneering Italian sea captain born on January 18, 1951, in Somma Lombardo. She became the first Italian woman to serve as a deck officer on a commercial ship. Despite facing gender discrimination, she successfully completed her nautical training and worked her way up to captain by 1978. Alga's last voyage was aboard the motonave Tito Campanella, which tragically sank in the Bay of Biscay on January 14, 1984, resulting in the loss of her life and that of her husband, along with 22 crew members.
