Ali Akbar Khan (April 14, 1922 – June 18, 2009) was a highly acclaimed Indian classical musician renowned for his skillful sarod playing. Also known as Khansahib or Ustad, he was a key figure in promoting Indian classical music in the West, often performing alongside sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. He founded a music school in Calcutta in 1956 and later established the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1967, which has branches in San Rafael and Basel. Khan was nominated for five Grammy Awards and awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1989.
