He is currently serving as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, having previously held the position of First Deputy Prime Minister under Asqar Mamin. Additionally, he served as the Minister of Finance from September 2018 until May 2020. Smaiylov was nominated as the new Prime Minister following the Kazakh protests of 2022, and his nomination was unanimously approved by the country's parliament.
