Born on April 20, 1917, in East Ham, London, he grew up in a musical family and was influenced by his brother, saxophonist Jack Hodgkins. In the 1940s, he collaborated with well-known artists such as Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Hodgkiss recorded several tracks in 1946 and played with various bands throughout the 1940s and 1950s. His career was hindered by epilepsy, but he also contributed to teaching aspiring guitarists, including the noted Bert Weedon.
