He was elected as the mayor of Medellín from 2008 to 2011. Salazar studied social communication and journalism at the Universidad de Antioquia and has published significant works addressing urban violence and social issues in Colombia. He co-founded the political movement Compromiso Ciudadano, which successfully elected Sergio Fajardo as mayor. Additionally, Salazar has contributed articles to various magazines and newspapers and taught about urban violence at the Universidad de Antioquia.
