Alonzo Earl Short Jr. is a retired United States Army lieutenant general, born on January 27, 1939, in North Carolina. He grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia, and graduated with a B.S. in education from Virginia State College in 1962. Commissioned through ROTC, he served in various Army Signal Corps roles and as a commander in several units. He was promoted to lieutenant general in 1990 and served as the commanding officer of the Information Systems Command and director of the Defense Information Systems Agency until 1994.
