Alphonso 'Piggy' Gerard was a professional baseball outfielder in the Negro leagues, playing from 1945 to 1948 for teams like the New York Black Yankees and Indianapolis Clowns. Born in Saint Croix, he was the first Virgin Islander in a recognized major league and the only one in the Negro Leagues. Gerard also played in Canada, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic and participated in the Puerto Rican Winter League from 1944 to 1958. He passed away on July 14, 2002.
