He participated in three Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the 10m platform event in 1968 in Mexico City. He also placed fourth in the 3m springboard event in 1960. Gaxiola earned multiple medals at the Pan American Games and Central American and Caribbean Games throughout his career. He studied civil engineering at the University of Michigan and passed away from cancer in 2003.
