Álvaro Matute Aguirre was a prominent Mexican historian born on April 19, 1943, in Mexico City. He served on the Governing Board of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from 1999 to 2009 and was named an Emeritus Researcher at the university in 2004. Matute was also a member of the Mexican Academy of History from 1998 until his death in 2017, holding chair 11. Shortly before passing away on September 12, 2017, he was announced as a new member of the Mexican Academy of Language.
