Amartya Kumar Sen, born on November 3, 1933, is an Indian economist and philosopher of Bengali descent. Since 1972, he has worked in the United States and the United Kingdom. Sen has made significant contributions to welfare economics, social choice theory, economic and social justice, economic theories of famine, and indices measuring the welfare of citizens in developing countries. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 and the Bharat Ratna in 1999 for his work in welfare economics.
