Amos Nur (February 9, 1938 – June 11, 2024) was an American-Israeli geophysicist who served as a professor at Stanford University. He was considered a leading academic authority in rock physics, applying its results to understand tectonophysical processes in the Earth's crust, particularly the role of fluids in these processes and energy resources. Nur pioneered the use of seismic velocity measurements to characterize changing conditions of oil and gas reservoirs, a process known as 'four-dimensional seismic monitoring.' With over 240 publications and guiding numerous doctoral candidates, he remained affiliated with Stanford as an emeritus professor after retiring in 2008.
