She specialized in shot put and achieved notable placements, including sixth at the European Athletics Championships in 1958 and 1962, and eighth at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Her best mark was 17.47 m achieved on June 25, 1972, in Bucharest. Sălăgean also competed in the 1971 and 1972 Indoor European Championships, finishing sixth and eleventh respectively.
