He served as a professor of music theory and composition at the Rostov State Conservatory named after S.V. Rachmaninoff, where he was also rector from 1981 to 1988. Kusiakov became a member of the Union of Composers of the USSR in 1972 and was honored with the title of People's Artist of Russia in 2005. He passed away on July 11, 2007.
