Anatoly Vasilyevich Chekunov was a prominent Ukrainian geologist born on March 24, 1932, in Kharkiv. He specialized in the comprehensive study of the deep structure of the lithosphere using methods of deep geophysics. Chekunov earned his Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences degree in 1972 and became a professor in 1973. He was also an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1979 until his death on February 10, 1996, in Kyiv.
