Andrea Jenkins is an American politician, writer, performance artist, poet, and transgender activist, born on May 10, 1961. She made history as the first Black openly transgender woman elected to public office in the United States, serving on the Minneapolis City Council since January 2018. Jenkins has also served as the council's president from January 2022 to January 2024. After moving to Minnesota in 1979 for university, she worked in various roles including a decade with Hennepin County government and later as a curator for the Transgender Oral History Project.
