Andréi Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer born in Ukraine, known as the Rostov Ripper. Active from 1978 to 1990, he murdered at least 52 women and children, although he claimed to have killed 56. He was convicted of 52 murders in October 1992 and was executed in February 1994. His infamous nickname comes from the large number of murders he committed in the Rostov region of the RSFSR. His crimes shocked the nation and remain one of the most notorious series of killings in Soviet history.
