Andrej Tyurin (1940-2002) was a Russian mathematician known for his work in algebraic geometry. He studied at Lomonosov University under Igor Shafarevitsch, earning his doctorate in 1965. Tyurin contributed to the Schafarevitsch seminar focused on algebraic surfaces and earned a Russian doctorate in 1971 for proving Torelli-type theorems for algebraic curves and Fano varieties. He taught at the Steklov Institute in Moscow and was restricted from foreign travel until the late 1980s. Tyurin introduced Tjurin invariants in 1981 and was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
