His dedication led to a notable potato-hunting expedition in 1990 to the Guaitecas Archipelago, which marked the southern limit of Pre-Hispanic agriculture. He established the first gene bank for Chilean potatoes at the Austral University of Chile and significantly improved local varieties for small-scale agriculture.
