Andrew Freeman was an American electrical engineer known for inventing the electric block heater for automobiles. Born on March 10, 1909, in Upham, North Dakota, Freeman studied electrical engineering at the University of North Dakota. He managed Minnkota Power Cooperative from 1940 to 1982 and co-founded Five Star Manufacturing Company. His innovation led to the granting of U.S. Patent #2487326 for the block heater in 1949. Since 2004, the Andrew Freeman Design Innovation Competition has been held at his alma mater to honor his contributions to engineering.
