Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine was an English mountaineer born on June 8, 1924, in Irvin, Birkenhead, Cheshire. He was part of the British expedition to Mount Everest in 1924, aiming to reach the highest peak in the world at 8,848 meters. He was one of six children of William Ferguson Irvine and Lilian Davis-Coolie. His father had Scottish and Welsh roots, while his mother belonged to an old Cheshire family. Irvine was also a cousin of journalist and writer Lyn Irvine, and political activist Harriet Shaw Weaver.
