McDonald was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Middlesbrough in the UK Parliament's 55th session during a by-election in 2012, serving from November 30, 2012, to March 30, 2015. He was re-elected in the 2015 general election (56th session) and continues to serve as the MP for Middlesbrough in the 57th session after being elected again in the 2017 general election.
