He holds the position of Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford and is a fellow at Pembroke College, Oxford. Previously, he was the Provost of Trinity College, Toronto from 2007 to 2013. In 2021, allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him were made public, which involved institutions like the University of Cambridge and the University of Toronto.
