Born in Manchester, she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in biochemistry from the University of Sheffield, and her PhD in chemical pathology from the University of Manchester in 1961. After 17 years of work on oral contraceptives, she shifted her focus to the effects of the enzyme aromatase on breast cancer. Her work led to significant advancements in cancer treatment, including the development of the first marketed aromatase inhibitor in 1994.
