Anil Kumar Das was an internationally renowned Indian Bengali astronomer known for his significant contributions to heliophysics. During the International Geophysical Year from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958, he was responsible for solar observations from the southern Indian solar observatory in Kodaikanal. In 1960, he established a 12-meter diameter solar tunnel telescope, which enabled him to gather primary data related to the structure and dynamics of the Sun's surface through helioseismology. A lunar crater is named Das Crater in his honor.
