Anna Der-Vartanian (December 6, 1920 - August 4, 2011) was the first woman to be promoted to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, achieving the highest enlisted rating in the fleet. In 1959, she made history by becoming the first woman in the U.S. Armed Forces to attain the E-9 rank while serving as an assistant to the Director of Global Strategy at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. She passed away at the age of 90 and was buried with full military honors.
