Anna Hietanen-Makela (1909-1994) was a Finnish geologist who spent most of her career in the United States. She graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1933 with a degree in physics and obtained her doctorate in 1938 on the petrology of Finnish quartzites. Hietanen worked as an assistant in mineralogy at the University of Helsinki and later joined the U.S. Geological Survey as a geologist. She achieved fame through her field studies in Idaho and Sierra Nevada, specializing in geology, petrology, mineralogy, and geochemistry.
