Antje Boetius is a German marine biologist born on March 5, 1967. She is a professor of geological microbiology at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen. In March 2009, she received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, funding her research on seafloor microorganisms affecting global climate with €2.5 million. Boetius was the first to describe anaerobic oxidation of methane and believes that methane-driven life forms could exist without molecular oxygen. Her research interests include the marine methane cycle, microbial ecology, and the effects of pressure and temperature on microbial processes.
